PRICELESS

Looks like someone needs a change of undies!! haha
Another Swans Final Classic against West Coast and another club Finals classic this decade to put in the book. What is it with us and one point wins??? But what sets this apart from the 96 Prelim, and the 3 finals last year that ended with the Premiership finally in our keeping was our four quarter effort. In the above four games we normally have a quiet quarter but tonight we matched West Coast all night and basically headed when we need to, that sets tonight apart.
Anyway despite the best efforts of Hunter and Chick though some pretty low, dirty acts we have managed to get away from Perth with Roosy first win there, a week off to rest the injured bodies and a home Prelim Final at Telstra Stadium against either Freo or Melbourne.
"It's significant because we are already in the preliminary final, that is the only difference between this year and last year," Roos said.
Sweet feeling too.
SYDNEY: 3.2 7.3 10.6 13.7 (85)
WEST COAST: 2.3 4.6 9.9 12.12 (84)
GOALS: Hall 5, O'Loughlin 4, Schneider 2, Kirk, Goodes.
Best Swan on Ground: Micky O'Loughlin - Just for what he did in the picture above. Plus the four goals weren't too bad either.
Rising Star: Nick Malceski - Really came of age tonight. All over the ground, got plenty of the ball and came back from a big hit off the ball from Chick when others wouldn't and set Micky up for the winning goal and the picture we see above (yes I really DO love that pic).

No Changes for Weekend's Clash with Crows
Despite being named on Thursday night's extended 7 man interchange bench, Ben Mathews, Ted Richards and Paul Chambers all failed in their attempts to regain their spots in the senior side after a week in the reserves (if you call a match against the ACT under 21's which ended up with both side being mixed together to make it "competitive", a solid hit out to base a re-call to a senior side on).
So at least we know Roosy has his head screwed on in that regard, lets hope the 22 players who do take the field on Sunday, do the job and beat the Crows in what would be a major upset despite the home ground advantage, despite being last years premiers and despite being in the Top 6.
I doubt its going to happen people.

NEW: Jason Roe (North Adelaide)
Field umpires: Grun, Schmitt, McInerney
Well no changes to the Swans line up that beat the Cats last week so really nothing to speak about on that front, however the interesting bit is the umpiring selection of a certain Shane McInerney who we may all recall fucked us out of a home prelim final with the "free kick that wasn't" against Leo Barry against West Coast in the final in Week One. Will be interesting to see how he umpires us seeing as that mistake cost him a spot on the umpiring panel for the Grand Final (quite rightly though). Still should be a good game against a team we had no fear of when they were at their peak, so who know what will happen know they at in 16th spot as we speak.

Swans vs Demons Teams
Here are the teams for this weekends match against the Demons, keeping in mind the expanded benches. So far only the one chance for the Swans and that Tadhg Kennelly coming into the expanded bench with no one going out just yet.

Edit: Well it seems that Willo will now sit out this week match meaning that he makes way for Tadhg. So Fosdike goes into the starting 18 and the bench is made up of Chambers, Tadhg, Malceski and Buchanan. Getting close to our best possible side.

Team for Round One vs Essendon
Well Round One is finally here and the teams for Saturday Night's clash have been named, so to start this preview here are the team list for both sides:
Sydney
B: Mathews, Richards, Crouch
HB: Barry, Roberts-Thomson, Bolton
C: Ablett, Williams, Schneider
HF: O'Keefe, Goodes, Davis
F: Bolton, Hall, O'Loughlin
R: Jolly, Kirk, Buchanan
I: Chambers, Fosdike, Dempster, McVeigh
EM: Malceski Moore Vogels
Essendon
B: Slattery Fletcher Bradley
HB: Lovett-Murray Solomon McVeigh
C: McPhee Watson Camporeale
HF: M.Johnson Lucas Welsh
F: Monfries Lloyd Hird
R: Hille Stanton Peverill
I: Heffernan J.Johnson Lovett Ryder
EM: Bolton Nash Winderlich
So right off the bat we head into the season with only three changes to to our Grand Final side with Sean Dempster lining up after periously being expected to miss a week. As a result, Vogels misses out on senior selection and Malceski losses his personal fight for a position with McVeigh. Ted Richards has been named to face his old side first up and going by the squad on paper will line up on Lloyd (but we all know what named line ups mean at the Swans).
Eseendon have named James Hird after it looked like he would miss a month of footy a few days ago, but its still expected that he'll pull out late with the "Essendon Flu".
STATS
Some quick stats of interest:
- Sydney have won Five of its past Six matches at Telstra Dome.
- Barry Hall has kicked 7 goals in his past two games at the Dome.
- Sydney have beaten Essendon 4 of the last 5 times the two teams have met.
- Lloyd has kicked 42 goals in 9 games since 1999 against the Swans.
- Lloyd kicked two bags of four goals in the two matches against the Swans last year.
- Sydney are 4/6 in Round since 2000.
- Essendon has lost in Round One each of the past three years
Key Player
Quite simply - Barry Hall.
Has put Essendon to the sword nearly every time the two clubs have met since 2002. He has kicked 29 goals, averaged 17 disposals, 11 marks and received 11 Brownlow vote in the 6 matches the clubs have played in his time at the Swans. To see what impact he can make you only have to look at his effort against Essendon in Round 19 last year with 7 goals in a Best On Ground effort.
Umpires
#9- Matt Stevic
#25- Shaun Ryan
#27- Michael Avon
Clearly you most likely can tell I'm happy that we got this got rather than the normal group of pissweak umps who fuck us up week to week, say for example, Goldspink.
Verdict
Despite the media jumping on the Windy Hill bandwagon, the Swans are in no different a position to where we were 12 months ago with only one major player out with injury and the lost of only one walk up starter to retirement.
Nothing Essendon has done really has impressed me and when I watched the practice match at Princess Park between the two sides a few weeks back it was clear that the Swans were only playing at 75% capacity and lost as a result. However in that same match in the second quarter we played close 100% and outscored Essendon by 6 goals to show that we had plenty in the tank, but clearly didn't want to show our hand with Round One in mind.
Expect a close match as Swans matches always are, but regardless of the media hype the boys should pick up the four points and get our premiership defence off to the perfect start.
Swans by 13 points

Squad to Face St Kilda
Well finally the final practice match has come and finally we can start to put behind us the crappy efforts of the pre season so far. I still don't expect to win but at least I expect the boy's to put in a greater effort and get a desent warm up for the season proper under their belt. Anyway the game is in Newcastle at 1.45pm against St Kilda and here is the squad for the match, with pretty much the entire available senior squad playing
Squad: Luke Ablett, Leo Barry, Craig Bolton, Jude Bolton, Amon Buchanan, Paul Chambers, Jared Crouch, Nick Davis, Stephen Doyle, Adam Goodes, Heath Grundy, Barry Hall, Darren Jolly, Brett Kirk, Jarrad McVeigh, Nick Malceski, Ben Mathews, Jarred Moore, Ryan O'Keefe, Michael O'Loughlin, Ted Richards, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Tim Schmidt, Adam Schneider, David Spriggs, Kristin Thornton, Luke Vogels, Paul Williams

All hands on Deck for Tigers Match Up
Well this week is the week we let loose our entire senio playing group that isn't isn't against the Tigers in the build up to Round One. The big news is that Michael O'Loughlin will play his first pre-season match since 2002 and basically its the Grand Final side minus Kennelly, Ball, and Bevan, with Richards, Spriggs, Chambers, Doyle, Malceski, Vogels and McVeigh added.
With Richmond going all out, this should be a real good test to prepare the squad. Anyway here is the squad for this week:
1. Barry Hall
2. Nick Davis
3. Jarrad McVeigh
4. Ben Mathews
5. Ryan O’Keefe
6. Craig Bolton
8. David Spriggs
9. Nick Malceski
10. Paul Williams
12. Nic Fosdike
13. Adam Schneider
15. Stephen Doyle
16. Darren Jolly
19. Michael O’Loughlin
20. Luke Ablett
21. Leo Barry
23. Paul Chambers

Squad for Match vs Essendon Mk II
Here is the 27 man squad listed on the AFL website. Note that Tadhg isn't listed to play in the following squad, yet the club name him as one of the returning premiership players in an article on the club website.
1. Barry Hall (c)
2. Nick Davis
4. Ben Mathews
5. Ryan O’Keefe
6. Craig Bolton
8. David Spriggs
9. Nick Malceski
10. Paul Williams
12. Nic Fosdike
13. Adam Schneider
16. Darren Jolly
21. Leo Barry (c)
22. Matthew Laidlaw
23. Paul Chambers
25. Ted Richards
31. Brett Kirk (c)
33. Jarred Moore
34. Ryan Brabazon
36. Tim Schmidt
37. Adam Goodes
38. Luke Vogels
39. Heath Grundy
41. Ed Barlow*
43. Stefan Garrubba*
46. Sam Rowe*
48. Kieran Jack*
49. Adam Prior*
Giving Doyle, Jude, Dempster, LRT and Ablett a rest this week because they have played all the pre season matches so far. Should be another match to give the senior players a light hitout (before cranking it up for Round 1 with reported matches against Richmond on the Gold Coast on the 11th and a match on the 17th in Newcastle against a side to be named.) and the young kids one of the last chances to get full gametime before heading back to the reserves.
As I said earlier in the week I'll be heading out to Princess Park and will report on the match at some point during the weekend.

Squad's For NAB Cup Round One Clash vs Kangaroos
Well as expected the Swans named a pretty weakened line up for their Round One NAB Cup clash with the Roos in Canberra on the weekend. From the 27 man squad that will be cut to 24 by Saturday, we will have only the 7 Premiership players promised by Roosy and 8 players who are fighting it out for selection in the senior team come Round One. Don't have an idea who the three to drop out of the squad will be, but wouldn't be surprised if Craig Bolton was one of them, but in any case its not going to be a huge issue that will cost us the game.
We aren't going into it to win it and from the look of the two squads named we certainly won't. Still I expect a solid showing from our kids simular to that put up against Essendon a week ago.
Kanga's by 15 points.
Sydney Swans squad: Luke Ablett, Ed Barlow, Craig Bolton, Ryan Brabazon, Amon Buchanan, Paul Chambers, Paul Currie, Sean Dempster, Stephen Doyle, Stefan Garrubba, Heath Grundy, Kieren Jack, Matthew Laidlaw, Nick Malceski, Ben Mathews, Jarred Moore, Ryan O'Keefe, Simon Phillips, Adam Prior, Ted Richards, Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Sam Rowe, Jonathan Simpkin, David Spriggs, Kristin Thornton, Luke Vogels, Jame Wall.
Kangaroos squad: Hamish McIntosh, Jonathan Hay, Brady Rawlings, Daniel Harris, Shannon Grant, Adam Simpson, Daniel Wells, Jesse Smith, David Trotter, Kasey Green, Leigh Brown, Andrew Swallow, Drew Petrie, Corey Jones, Nathan Thompson, Michael Firrito, Ed Lower, Sav Rocca, Brent Harvey, Daniel Pratt, David Hale, Eddie Sansbury, Ben Schwarze, Shannon Watt, Joel Perry, Josh Gibson, Leigh Harding, Brent LeCras.
Adopt-a-Swan Update: McVeigh and Fosdike weren't named in this weekend's squad and thus I get off having to right out a report on them. Still its a pity I would like to have seen this squad with both playing in it.

Swans vs Bombers - North Sydney Oval Practice Match Preview
Well the time has finally come for the Swans to open up their season on Australian soil when they face the Bombers tomorrow night at North Sydney Oval. What normally is a minor 15 a side hitout with few of each clubs stars playing has turned into a major issue, when the Bombers 24 man squad basically being full strength while the Swans side is made up of rookies and 4 players from the premiership team.
According to this report Roosy is expecting a trashing. If he was making these comments during the season one would question his sanity.
"I don't see any sense in having a game if you've got one team with 17 of their best 22 and another team that's got four of their best 22 - it makes no sense to have a game of that nature," Roos said.
and
"You can't not play but you know certainly it is probably, after seeing the team that Sheed's [Kevin Sheedy] has sent up, it is going to be obviously not much of a contest," he said."If you want to come and watch a slaughter come and watch on Friday night ... I might stay home to be honest."
Pretty harsh stuff. Still I'm of the view that any gametime against senior players will benefit our kids in the long term, but you can see where Roosy is coming from.
Still never expect favours from Sheedy in a team he names, sometimes he even adds a joke selection or two a la "A Japanese Bomber flies in to take on the Swans"
"You want to watch this kid play," Beard said. "Don't be surprised if he picks up 15 possessions for the game."
Certainly interesting and good for the game if this works out.
Expect a match report on the slaughter sometime tomorrow night.

Team Selections for the Big One
Well the teams are in and the Swans have yet again gone in with an unchanged line up for the Grand Final, while the Eagles have been forced to make two changes because of injury and might have to make a late change if Phil Matera fails to get though the Eagles final training session at the MCG today. On the Swans side we have made only one change to our team in the past 7 matches and that was after the finals loss to the Eagle 3 weeks back which saw Luke Vogels make way for Paul Bevan. There are no rumors of a late change from the Swans so we should into tomorrow with no drama's hanging over our head.

Team Selections for Prelim Final
Well the teams are in and despite the fact we bearly made it across the line last week, the Swans go into tomorrow night's prelim final unchanged in the hope that the wet conditions predicted will favour a smaller side than a side that sees a Vogels or Schauble brought in at the expense of a Paul Bevan. Will be interesting to see how the Swans play this game, but one would think that the plan is for the defence to run off defence and not allow the Saints time to settle.
I just hope its not a repeat of the Semi Final last year. Still here are the teams and the Saints as expected brought in Maguire and Hudghton, but didn't risk Hamill, Koschitzke and Peckett. How this effects things is to be seen.
SYDNEY
B: Crouch, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: Davis, Goodes, Dempster

Team Selections for Semi Final vs Cats
Been too gutted, busy, and sick to update the latest news this week but never fear I wouldn't forget to post the team line ups for this weeks match against Geelong at the SCG. After a month of no changes the Swans finally decided to make one and brought back Paul Bevan into the side for the very very unlucky Luke Vogels. I would think the move is because Roosy thinks Geelong are a smaller side to match up on and feels the extra grunt Bevo adds could come in handy, plus the fresh legs help.
Anyway here are the teams for this weeks match:
SYDNEY
B: Crouch, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: Nicks, Ablett, Dempster
HF: O’Keefe, Hall, J.Bolton
F: Goodes, O’Loughlin, Buchanan
R: Jolly, Kirk, Williams
Int: Ball, Fosdike, Schneider, Bevan
Emg: Vogels, Malceski, Schauble
In: Bevan
Out: Vogels
GEELONG

Team Selections For The Final
Well its Thursday Night and the Swans have named their team to face the Eagles tomorrow night at Subiaco. For me the excitement for this match has been building all week and by 8.30pm tommorrow night I will be drained of all emotional energy and will be forced to watch the match running upon the fumes of a oily rag. Still for the team they clearly have thought hard about every little detail and set off for Perth on Tuesday to get ready for the match and soak up the pressure from the Eagles public.
Still to the teams for this week and yet again the Swans have gone with an unchanged 22 man squad, showing continued faith in the team that has got them this far. On the other hands the Eagles have done likewise making only the one enforced change that has been a big news item all week (how could Roos get 3 matches and only have to serve 1 match?? Beats me, proves how stupid the system really is I guess).
Anyway here are the teams for the first final of 2005:
SYDNEY
B: Crouch, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: Goodes, Ablett, Dempster
HF: O’Keefe, Hall, J.Bolton
F: Davis, O’Loughlin, Buchanan
R: Jolly, Kirk, Williams
Int: Ball, Fosdike, Schneider, Vogels
Emg: Bevan, McVeigh, Powell
NO CHANGE
WEST COAST
B: Wirrpunda, Glass, Hunter
HB: Stenglein, Staker, Banfield
C: Embley, Cousins, Braun
HF: Chick, Gardiner, Kerr
F: Matera, Lynch. Seaby
R: Cox, Judd, Fletcher
Int: Hansen, B.Jones, Nicoski, Sampi
Emg: Butler, Green, R.Jones
In: B.Jones
Out: Selwood (concussion)
My tip, well you should know by now I don't give out tips. But anyway my heart says Sydney while the head says West Coast. Could and should be a cracker of a match.
Enjoy the match wherever you watch it, be it at the ground, at home or at the local pub.

Team Selections vs Round 22 Match vs Hawthorn
Well any thought that the Swans would go in our Round 22 match resting important player has been dismissed at the selection table. No changes were made to the 22 that lined up on Sunday. Clearly Roosy and the coaching staff have decided upon their team for the finals and injury willing this looks to be the 22 players that will attempt to do something that no group of Swans players has done in 72 years.
SYDNEY
B: Crouch, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: Goodes, Ablett, Dempster

Team Selections for Round 20 vs Lions
No changes at this stage from the side that beat Essendon with Bevan, Moore and Saddington coming in to make up the extended bench. They should become the emergencies come tomorrow night. However the big news is out of Brisbane who go into this match looking even smaller than our midget squad thanks to their horror injury list being added to by their 186cm CHB from last week in Macdonald. He injuried his hamstring at training tonight and looks likely to miss this week. They still look a strong side, but clearly they lack the height down the spine. Anyway here are this weeks teams:
SYDNEY
B: Dempster, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: Buchanan, Ablett, Crouch
HF: O’Keefe, Hall, J.Bolton
F: Schneider, O’Loughlin, Goodes

Round 19 Team Selections vs Essendon
Well no major changes to the side that went down to Adelaide last week, but as I feared we brought in Fosdike from Moore instead of a taller midfield/forward option like a McVeigh. So in dropping Moore we continue with the trial of Schneider/Buchanan in the same side. Other than that an impressive side. Essendon lose McVeigh to suspension, Solomon to a knee injury, Cupido for bad form. McPhee coming in would be my only worry from their group of in's.
Anyway here are the teams for Saturday Night:
SYDNEY
B: Dempster, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: Buchanan, Ablett, Crouch
HF: O’Keefe, Hall, J.Bolton
F: Davis, O’Loughlin, Goodes
R: Jolly, Kirk, Williams
Int: Ball, Fosdike, Schneider, Vogels
Emg: Bevan, Moore, Saddington
In: Fosdike
Out: Moore
ESSENDON
B: Lovett-Murray, Fletcher, McPhee
HB: Bolton, Bradley, Welsh
C: Winderlich, J.Johnson, Murphy
HF: M.Johnson, Lucas, Hird
F: Lovett, Lloyd, Dyson
R: Hille, Stanton, Peverill
Int: Henneman, Richards, Rioli, Monfries
Emg: Alvey, Watson, Slattery
In's: Bolton, Monfries, McPhee
Out's: McVeigh (susp), Solomon (knee), Cupido

Round 18 Team Selections vs Adelaide
The teams are in for this weeks match against the Crows and the Swans have made two quite un-expected changes for the match bringing in Jarrad Moore and Luke Vogels in place of McVeigh and Malceski. I gather the Swans wanted to go with a bit of extra height with Vogels but with Moore I don't see how having him help other than to spell Schneider as a forward pocket. Still at least the changes are cosmedic rather than forced. For the Crows they made the one change with Johncock replacing the injured Torney in defence, which isn't that big a deal for us (sadly). Still here are the teams that go into battle on Saturday Night.
SYDNEY
B: Dempster, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: Buchanan, Ablett, Crouch
HF: O’Keefe, Hall, J.Bolton
F: Davis, O’Loughlin, Goodes
R: Jolly, Kirk, Williams
Int: Ball, Moore, Schneider, Vogels
Emg: Bevan, McVeigh, Saddington
In's: Moore, Vogels
Out's: McVeigh, Malceski
ADELAIDE
B: Johncock, Rutten, Bassett
HB: Hart, Bock, Mattner
C: van Berlo, Thompson, Burton
HF: Ricciuto, McGregor, Goodwin
F: McLeod, Welsh, Hentschel
R: Hudson, Shirley, Edwards
Int: Doughty, Perrie, Reilly, Biglands
Emg: Skipworth, Knights, S.Stevens

Only the early 25 man squad but from the looks of things we will be heading into this weeks team with pretty much the same line up as last week. Schauble misses yet again and LRT plays yet again.
Anyway here are the early teams for this round:
SYDNEY
B: Dempster, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: Buchanan, Ablett, Crouch
HF: O’Keefe, Hall, J.Bolton
F: Davis, O’Loughlin, Goodes

In's: McVeigh, Moore, Saddington
Out's: None So far
WEST COAST
B: Wirrpunda, Glass, B.Jones
HB: Chick, Staker, Banfield
C: Stenglein, Cousins, Braun
HF: Sampi, McDougall, Kerr
F: Matera, Lynch, Seaby
R: Cox, Judd, Fletcher
Int from: Butler, Graham, R.Jones, Morton, Nicoski, Rosa, Selwood
In's: Sampi, Graham, R.Jones, Morton, Rosa

Round 16 Team Selections vs Demons
Well the Swans have made two changes to the side that ripped apart the Cats last weekend and brought in Malceski after his 40 plus touches in Canberra and Schnieder to act as the much needed small forward. Making way for them in like for like moves, were McVeigh who I feel was unfairly treated again and Moore who is wasted as a small forward and isn't getting much gametime as a midfielder that he will become. Again no place in the side for Schauble who clearly has run over Roosy family Cat and LRT keeps his place when form dictates that he should of been dropped months ago.
Anyway here are the teams for this week:
SYDNEY

Well changes have been made with Jude Bolton making his expected return from injury and we also get to see for the first time this year Nic Fosdike, who is fighting to keep his play at the club for next season and has been hit with a few injuries this season. Team Selections for Round 13 vs Collingwood
Well after a two week break the Swans re-enter senior action with the much hyped match vs Collingwood at the Olympic Stadium. Should be our biggest home crowd of the season and for the match the Swans have named an unchanged line up with Jude Bolton failing to recover from his hamstring injury in time, like it was hoped when he was a late withdrawal from the Fremantle match. For Collingwood the big in is Nathan Buckley after 11 matches out. I'm sure the Swans fans at the game tomorrow will give him a nice welcome back, that or Roosy will name Kirk on him. Should be a good match and one that we have certainly not over the line yet in. Those who think we are, go outside, spin around three times and spit. Don't need you jinxing us now do we??
Anyway here are the teams
SYDNEY

Team Selections vs Fremantle
Team still to be finallised but looking at the extended bench and the ins, I would expect Ball and Williams to take 2 of the spots with Malceski likely to keep Dempster out of the third spot (can't drop Malceksi after his game last week) and the paper, sissors, rock to decide between Saddo and Schauble for the fourth spot (most likely to be Schauble, put I wouldn't rule out Saddo with Freo's small forward line). Will post the final ins and outs tomorrow when they become available.

Team Seletions vs Carlton
Well after last weeks piss poor effort many hoped that Roosy would take action at the selection table and make a fair few changes. Well to start out goes Paul Bevan who should of been dropped weeks ago, Saddington who Roos can't settle on a position for him, Nicks for being too old and Schneider because clearly Buchanan has photos that stop him from being dropped.
Still for ins we have pretty welcome returns in Schauble who should never of been dropped in the first place and Davis from injury. Also in are Spriggs (who must be sharing Amon's photo's) and a first gamer in Malceski (no doubt to play in a forward pocket from the bench). Overall a strong side, but I would still like to see Dempster back in the side.
Anyway here is this weeks teams
SYDNEY
B: Schauble, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: McVeigh, Ablett, Crouch
HF: O’Keefe, Goodes, Buchanan

Round 10 Team Selections vs St Kilda
Well there is some good news and there is some bad news with this weeks team selections. The good news is that Ball and Williams return from injury and re-enforce our midfield and ruck stocks, but the bad news and this I feel could be the difference between us winning and losing this week is that Dempster has been dropped when it should of been Bevan to get the chop, Schneider brought in to play alongside Buchanan when both should be in the side together and that Saddo has been dropped yet Schauble wasn't brought in to help the defence out. Also Jarrad Moore got the axe but that was likely just to give him a full match in Canberra this week.
Personally I think its a huge risk taking on the out of form, under pressure and injury hit Saints without Schauble or Saddo to help out in defence, leaving LRT as the only back up to Leo Barry and Craig Bolton who will now certainly get the jobs on Reiwoldt and Gehrig. For a match Roos has called a "must win", I can't help but think this weeks team plays into the Saints hands.
Team balance has been an important factor in our wins over the past three weeks and I believe Roos and the coaching staff have tipped the balance over the edge to a loss. I hope I'm wrong, but unless our midfield can stop the Saints from getting ball after ball kicked long, the defence is going to struggle and basically I think to rob Peter to pay Paul is going to mean Goodes will end up playing back and that just means our team make up is back to what it was against Adelaide and we all know what happened there.
I just have a sick feeling about this match now.
Anyway here are the teams
SYDNEY
B: Nicks, Barry, C.Bolton
HB: Mathews, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: McVeigh, Ablett, Crouch
HF: O’Keefe, Goodes, Williams
F: Vogels, Hall, O’Loughlin
FOLL: Jolly, Kirk, J.Bolton

C: Gram, Ball, Jones

F: Milne, Gehrig, Voss

Team Selections for Round 9 clash against Bulldogs
Well so far no major changes (or even minor ones for that matter), but that could change this time tomorrow, when the final team is submitted and if Willo makes his comeback to the side after injury. I think if he does play he'll replace McVeigh, if not then there will be no changes to the side that put away Port. Anyway here are the teams for this weeks match.
SYDNEY
B: Schauble, C.Bolton, Dempster
HB: Barry, Roberts-Thomson, Kennelly
C: Mathews, Ablett, Crouch
HF: O’Keefe, Goodes, Bevan

Swans vs Power Team Selections
SYDNEY
B: Schauble Bolton Dempster
HB: Barry Roberts-Thomson Kennelly
C: Mathews Ablett Crouch
HF: O’Keefe Vogels Bevan
F: Jolly Hall O’Loughlin
R: Goodes Kirk Bolton
Int: Buchanan Malceski McVeigh Moore Saddington Schneider Spriggs

PORT ADELAIDE
B: Bishop Wakelin Walsh

R: Primus Cassisi K.Cornes
Int: Brogan Chaplin Cochrane Eckermann Lade Mahoney Symes
IN: Brogan, Cochrane, C.Cornes, Symes

Overall not a bad side with Jolly back in and the likelyhood of Spriggs getting dropped to a level where he belongs so either McVeigh or Malceski could show us what the future of this club will really be like.

Swans vs Bombers Team Selections
Well finally Roos bit the bullet and made mass changes to the team. In comes the returning Saddo and Mathews and (best of all) first gamers Moore and Vogels (who was promoted to the senior list in place of Doyle). No happy that McVeigh was again dropped, but at least mass changes were made and 3 of the worst performing players from last week (Nicks, Schneider and Buchanan) got dropped. Sends a message to the list that no matter who you are, your not safe if you play poorly.
Teams as follows:
SYDNEY
B: J.Crouch A.Schauble P.Bevan
HB: L.Barry C.Bolton T.Kennelly
C: S.Dempster L.Ablett S.Maxfield
HF: R.O’Keefe L.Vogels N.Davis

Match Preview vs West Coast
So you expect me to do a detailed match preview, telling you how the Swans can do the un-thinkable and beat West Coast don't you??
Well I won't because I think that is pointless, but I will tell you in what area's we need to improve in to at least come close to winning and make a contest of this match. (If you want one, then go and read the RWO Match Preview written by Justin Dow and Liz Read.)
I will say that watch out for a different Swans outfit this week, freed from the small confines of the SCG. Things that haven't worked the past two weeks might work this week because of the extra room to move and Magic and Hall have plenty of room up forward to create some havoc. The defence will be helped by the return of Schauble and LRT and Goodes will do OK in the ruck and will provide the X Factor in this match.
All we need now is the midfield to put in a performance like they did in last years final and get as much ball as the Eagles midfield and do something with it for once. If it rains I'd say advantage US if not we'll have to work hard helping out the defence and midfield stoppers to limit the Eagles impact going forward. It can be done, but it needs the team to put PRESSURE on the Eagles midfield and not allow them time to do what they do best.
If we can get the ball forward enough times we should be able to kick goals, just need to make sure we kick more than 10 of them and limit the waste of behind's that headline the last two weeks.
Anyway do I expect to win? No, not likely to happen but it can happen and we have seen this team do it before (a certain final in 03 springs to mind). We won't get wiped off the face of the planet by the Eagles if we lose and if we win it will be a close one, but in my heart of hearts we are lacking too much in the midfield and without proper ruckmen we will be hurt too much by Cox and Gardiner.
Still watch the match, like I will and hope for the best
Eagles by 24 points
Best Swans on Ground: Michael O'Loughlin and Barry Hall (10 goals between them) and Jude Bolton again.

NO CHANGE
Well that certainly wasn't what I had hoped for. One bloody change and thats just the captain returning from suspension for an injured player. Jolly's been named and if he losses the appeal, one would expect Schauble to come into the side as his replacement.
That's just not good enough. You can't expect to improve with the same shit players week after week. Why not give the likes of Willoughby or Malceski a run and give players like them hope of playing senior football. At the moment this team is like a bloody closed shop, a boys own club if you will.
A fucking joke

Round 5 Match Preview vs Demons
After last weeks piss poor effort against the Crows the Swans have to front up against the (until last week) front running Demons at the SCG and hope for the best with our midfield minus Paul Williams and Stuart Maxfield and ruck stocks that are up shit creek sooner than planned thanks to the injury to Jason Ball. At least it means we could see Adam Goodes play though the midfield a lot more than he has since winning the Brownlow Medal. If he does then mark my words we will win.
Those who have read my rantings this week will know I blamed the lose last Sunday on the lack of height down back because the Crows bombed the ball in long and the height difference in the end told the story. However this week we have LRT back in defense at least to provide an option to go with Brad Miller at CHB, while Leo Barry hopes and prays he gets some help on David Neitz if the Demons bomb it in long like the Crows did. If so we should see Craig Bolton leaving his post on Russell Robertson to punch from behind. If the ball falls to ground we have Kennelly and Dempster to quickly move the ball out and up forward.
However if we really want to stop the Demons moving the ball forward quickly we must get it ourselves and move it on fast and if the Demons have the ball put pressure on them quick smart. I think our midfield this week is helped by the fact the Demons midfield isn’t as talented or as deep as the Crows was and in an even better outcome for the Swans, the Demons have lost their best midfielder in Cameron Bruce to a Shoulder injury. I think it should be an interesting duel in the midfield and it could be tipped in the Swans favour IF Goodes is played in there for once, because the Dees have no one to match up on him.
This weeks Captain, ‘Captain’ Kirk could be released from normal tagging duties and used to provide the grunt and drive that Maxfield normally provides. That would leave Ablett to latch onto Yze, Mathews on Green and Crouch onto Davey. That should Allow the likes of Bolton, McVeigh, Spriggs and hopefully Goodes to take charge of the ball and force it forward. In the ruck Jolly will be forced to go up against his old side and his old master in Jeff White, so should be able to get a full game out of him with limited help from LRT and Goodes.
Up forward the Swans should really benefit from Magic’s game last week as he’ll be able to play close to a full match and make more of an impact close to goal. Thus the work of Barry Hall to provide him with a big enough hole is important. I believe the Dees will go with Ryan Ferguson on Hall as Bizzell and Rivers are a little too under-sized to match up on Hall and that’s not to say Ferguson is the best option either. Still this should allow Hall to work 40m out from goal and allow Magic to work from the goal square. Hopefully if we get that set up working, O’Keefe will be able to but in his best effort of the season dropping back to provide a third option going forward and Nick Davis camping on the 50 to be ready to bomb a few goals. I also expect Schneider and Buchanan to interchange as the crumbing forward pocket.
Anyway, this is going to be a tough match and I for one hope Paul Roos learnt from last week that our style for the last year puts too much pressure on us as a team. Move the ball quickly and having a sound forward set up is far more important and I think with the team we have this week, that shouldn’t be a problem. As for a tip, I expect the Swans to turn things around early on to break out to a 5 goal lead at Half Time, only to allow the Demons back into the match in the second half, only to hold on thanks to a late goal from O’Loughlin to win by a few goals
Swans by 15 points
Best on Ground – Adam Goodes
Leading Goalkicker – Barry Hall and Michael O’Loughlin with 3 each.
