News Roundup - Wed 4/5

Well I'll start today with the going spat between the Swans and the AFL. It seems as though Roos has decided to take some action upon the AFL and has pulled out of his committment to speak to 25 AFL big wigs on the State of the game in NSW.

"I think Paul feels seriously that he's a major supporter of the AFL in this market, and I think he feels this (the Demetriou criticism) was entirely inappropriate and unfair," Colless said.

Good call Roosy.

Depsite the boring nature of our play at the moment you needed to take action against the AFL for the unfair comments from Demetriou, who should of known better. I couldn't think of a better way to show the AFL than to pull out of a meeting that is of an important nature.

Still on to the news that after yesterday's reports that Club Captain Stuart Maxfield is spending half the week in Melbourne to be close to his kids, there has been pressure put upon him to step aside as Captain. In The Age we read that Swans skipper may have to quit.

Roos admitted he had asked Maxfield about the captaincy on Monday and would wait for his captain's decision when he returns to Sydney tomorrow.

"I must admit I haven't thought too clearly through it (the captaincy)," Roos said. "It's been the priority to get his family life in order. Now it's probably stage two in terms of where we go with the captaincy."

This debate is hotting up according to Watson calls on Maxfield to stand down as Swans captain in the Sydney Morning Herald.

But the thought of a club captain being away from his team for half the week brought criticism from many quarters yesterday, with several commentators, including former Essendon captain Tim Watson, calling for Maxfield to step down.

Now I have no problem with Stu, spending time in Melbourne during the week because his family HAS to come first, but at the same time the Swans need a captain who is available in Sydney during the week for media and promotional reasons. Having said that, I think its not the time to change captains and unless Stu decides on his own to step down then let allow him to get his family life in order during the week and captain the Swans on the weekend, until such time as he feels he isn't up to it.

Anyway onto the good news of the day and thats the return of Adam Goodes to being a full time ruckman. Roosy has seen the light and has taken his lumps to go back on his word not to use Goodes in the ruck again. I think this is good news and a step forward. But on to the articles. Goodes news bad news for vertically challenged Swans in the SMH details Goodes return to the ruck but also the back news of Doyle being out for the season. Still I liked this quote and proves Roos is trying to change thing around.

"I came away with the fact that whilst we have probably tried to protect him and play him elsewhere, I think he plays his best football as a ruckman," Roos said. "Having Goodesy in the ruck provides us with an attacking option that we haven't had and I think he enjoys his footy more in the ruck."

Goodes is back in the circle game in The Australian is the other article on the matter.

Well thats it for now.
