Swans looking to future in Demons clash

When I read this article, I officially gave up on the 2005 season premiership hope's of the Swans. Sure we will end up around mid table and might even just make the final's. But what's the point of building for the future or trying to get back to the successful attack-minded gameplan that won us so many matches, when the coach considers the "future" to be players like Schneider and thinks Leo Barry is the better "Full Back" option than Andrew Schauble.

"This weekend is an opportunity for Swans fans to come and look at what our future looks like," said Roos.

In their absence, Roos will look to Jarrad McVeigh and Adam Schneider to step up their midfield productivity to complement the tireless efforts of Brett Kirk and Jude Bolton.

Well, Roosy

I can't understand why you think what this team needs is Schneider back in the side, McVeigh sure he HAS to come in but Schneider should only play at the expense of Buchanan and be positioned in the Forward Pocket.

With Willo and Maxfield out of the midfield we need to bring in some of our young midfield talent and final expose them to senior footy. McVeigh, Willoughby and Malceski are clearly fighting out for the two available spots in my mind. But I guess Schneider is now the wildcard option. Oh joy

"In terms of size it does become very difficult and draining on Leo as a player.

"Even with Schauble and James in, we choose Leo to take the mismatch role because of his history against those key position players.

"He has been our best defender and one of the best defenders in AFL for three or four years."

So Paul, I ask you this question.

If your idea of defence at the moment is so draining on Leo, why keep it up?? It sure as hell didn't work against Adelaide on Sunday and it will look even worse on Saturday Night against the Demons who have two better Key Position Forward's than the Crows in Neitz and Miller. Clearly Sunday showed the football world how to beat the Swans and that's just bomb it in long to your tall forwards.

Sure Leo is a very good defender and the jobs he has done at Full Back with Schauble out of the side the past two seasons has been great, but I know I rather him teaming up with Tadhg Kennelly and Sean Dempster across Half Back like 2003.

More exciting to watch that's for sure

If Schauble was fully fit I would agree with you 100%. But Barry is the next best option, even though it detracts from our run. Unless you are really prepared to chance your arm and chuck someone like Guy Campbell or LRT down back. That's a big ask playing on one of the premier FFs of the comp.

It doesn't mean Neitz cannot be held. Watch how the Dees will take on Barry Hall. They don't have a key defender that can contain Hall one on one. Ferguson is too small and Nicholson is too slow. What they will endeavour to do is block off his space, perhaps Jeff White will drop back in the 'hole', or have other Demons defenders helping back whenever possible.

As for Schneider, he hasn't looked the same since coming back from injury. Where once his bold play was lauded as daring, its now being derided as selfish and playing against the percentages. If Schneider can recapture the form of 2003 he'd be welcome to claim a place in the 22. But he just doesn't look like it at the moment. I would go with Buchanan because he can play in the midfield.

Look I totally agree that if Schauble is out, then Leo is the next best option. However as last week showed we need some height down back and I think the suggestion of dropping LRT back into the hole would do some good.

Anyway my beef is with Roos, if he thinks we'll ever win a flag with Leo at Full Back with Schauble playing.

As for Schneider, I just don't think he has been the same since half way though 03. He really lack the ability to brake open games and from the looks of things lacks the fitness to play midfield full time, like I hoped after the retirement of Cressa

I don't think Roos has said Barry will be the fullback in a full strength side. Correct me if I'm wrong. LRT will need time to develop further, which some at RWO aren't willing to give him.
